The Valley Catholic
From Sept. 28-Nov. 6, pro-life warriors in the Rio Grande Valley, will be uniting with many others from coast to coast – and internationally – for a major simultaneous pro-life mobilization – the 40 Days for Life campaign.
Faithful believers across America are praying that these efforts will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in America.
Sister Nancy Boushey of the Benedictine Monastery of the Good Shepherd in Rio Grande City and director of pro-life activities for the Diocese of Brownsville said that during these 40 days we must pray for the end of abortion and create awareness about abortion and the lasting physical and psychological effects it has not only women but the community as a whole.
“There is a real crisis going on in our Rio Grande Valley,” Sister Boushey said. “This is legalized murder happening in our community. We ask that the faithful of the Valley commit themselves to this campaign, even if it’s just for one hour a week. Come out and pray in front of an abortion mill. What we really need is your presence.
“We have made some strides in spreading the pro-life message but there is still much work to be done.”
Nancy Sandrock, director of the Rio Grande Valley event, echoed Sister Boushey’s sentiments about the need for more prayer. She suggested that some may consider joining or creating a prayer group so that there is a constant vigil at the abortion clinics in McAllen and Harlingen.
“Please prayerfully consider helping us make this a successful campaign in the Rio Grande Valley,” she said. “Perhaps you know people who can pray every day at the site. Perhaps you can commit to praying during your work day, in the course of your duties, and perhaps you know others who can do the same.”
Vision and Mission
40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion.
The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.
Why 40 Days?
God has used the period of 40 days throughout history to bring about major transformation…
• Noah experienced transformation during 40 days of rain
• Moses was transformed by 40 days on Mount Sinai
• David was transformed by Goliath’s 40 day challenge
• Elijah was transformed when God gave him 40 days of strength from one meal
• Nineveh was transformed when God gave the city 40 days to remain faithful
• Jesus transformed the world following His 40 days in the desert
• The disciples were transformed after spending 40 days with Jesus following His resurrection
What will God accomplish when people of faith across our community and beyond unite for 40 days of prayer and fasting, pulling out all the stops to end the violence of abortion?
We don’t know, but we’re sure excited to find out! Your help is needed locally to continue the growth of this movement and expand the outreach of the 40 Days for Life mission. 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program:
40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. Many people worldwide have said that they fervently believe that it is God's will that this work continue and grow.
There are three important things that you can do...to help make this happen.
1) The first way you can contribute to the future of this mission is through your continued prayer.
2) Second, your peaceful, prayerful presence at one of the two abortion mills is of high importance.
3) Third, to consider making a contribution of one dollar per day, in honor of each of the 40 days. Your gift will be used to raise awareness in the public sector for the precious gift of life.
KICK OFF: An enthusiastic Kick Off is scheduled for September 24th
LOCATION: Bus 83 and Main St. next to the Donna City Park
