Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley and Sisters on Wheels, with the support of the Diocese of Brownsville, invite everyone to participate in a 20-mile bicycle ride to benefit the construction of the Humanitarian Respite Center in downtown McAllen.

The Ride for Hope, scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, April 30, starts at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, located adjacent to the border wall, 902 S. 2nd. St., Hidalgo. Cyclists will ride through three cities: Hidalgo, Mission and McAllen.

The ride will have the support of the local law enforcement community and will be an inter-agency effort. There will be three rest stops along the way for cyclists.

The route will end at the future site of the new humanitarian respite center on the corner of Chicago Street and 16th Street in McAllen. A post-ride celebration will include music, drink and food plus other surprises for all participants.

This inaugural Ride for Hope aims to bring attention to the community’s continued support for helping people in need and restoring the dignity of the most vulnerable.

The ride also aims to raise awareness of the new shelter and community center that will be constructed to facilitate the work of bringing hope to others.

Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, said “This center symbolizes and celebrates the heart of the Rio Grande Valley community, which has shown its solidarity and compassion at all times.”

The donation per ride is $30 and the first 50 people who register will receive a free event T-shirt. Riders are required to wear helmets.
