What is a Vocation?
The word “vocation” derives from the Latin word vocatio, which means “a call.” The Catholic Church encourages each person to discern their calling. A person discerns and chooses single life, marriage, religious life, or holy orders. Even though God calls every person to different vocations, God desires for every person to respond to the call to holiness, the ultimate calling.
What is Discernment?
The word “discernment” derives from the Latin word discernere, which means “to separate.” We ask the questions: "What is God's will for us?" or "Is the Lord calling me to single life, religious life, marriage or priesthood?" With these questions, we examine our desire/attraction to a particular vocation. We discern or recognize God's will in our lives.
